Uber introduces driver ratings feature

While most Uber users can now see their driver-evaluated average rider rating just beneath their names in the top left corner of the app, users of the cab aggregating app in India will have to wait a few weeks before the feature is rolled out here.

Although buried deep within the app’s menu, riders can still find out their ratings by clicking on the ‘help’ option, which will take them to ‘account and payment’. After selecting ‘change my account settings’, users can submit a request to Uber by clicking on ‘I’d like to know my rating’.

For the uninitiated, Uber had introduced a two-way rating system globally whereby both riders and driver partners of the app can rate each other. Although the initiative was aimed at curbing bad behavior on the part of both riders and driver partners of the app, it also opened up the possibility of banning users – drivers as well as passengers – who compromised on the company’s principles.

“Ratings are a two-way street at Uber and our 5-star rating system helps to create a positive experience for everyone,” Uber Product Managers Mike Truong and Ronak Trivedi had said in a blog post.

Interestingly, in addition to making it easier for most users to access their rating, Uber has also modified its rating parameters under UberPOOL, which earlier tipped the balance in favor of riders.

Based on the latest update, riders who rate a trip less than 5 stars are expected to choose from a list of options that best justify their ratings. And when the reason is outside the realm of the driver’s control – like the route or the number of pickups – Uber will not include that toward the driver’s average rating.

“We believe that honest feedback helps ensure that everyone is accountable for their behavior,” said an Uber India spokesperson. “This accountability creates a respectful, safe environment for both riders and drivers,” the spokesperson added.

So technically, these ratings should only be a reflection of the driver’s performance and not the overall experience of the ride. So next time Uber’s algorithm matched you with a chatty co-rider, know that it’s not personal.
